Dinner Meeting:  Biofuels – Perspectives and Updates from SMUD and Waste Management

PROGRAM TOPIC

We have two excellent speakers to discuss current and future uses of biofuels.
Valentino Tiangco, Ph.D. – Dr. Tiangco is currently the Biomass Program Lead at the Sacramento Municipal Utilities District (SMUD) (Advanced, Renewable & Distributed Generation Technologies).  Dr. Tiangco was formerly a Senior Technical Lead and Manager of Biomass RD&D Projects at the Public Interest Energy Research (PIER) Renewables Program, Energy Research and Development Division, California Energy Commission.  Valentino Tiangco is a holder of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D. 1990) and Master of Science in Engineering (M.S. 1986), with specialization in Energy Conversion Systems at the University of California at Davis.  He has Master of Engineering (M.E. 1980) degree with specialization in Power Machinery and Management at the Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Thailand.  He has a Bachelor of Science degree (1978) in Biological and Agricultural Engineering (formerly Agricultural Engineering) with major emphasis in Machine Design at the University of the Philippines at Los Banos.
Dr. Tiangco will discuss the role biofuels have in SMUD's journey to produce 33% of its electricity from renewable resources.  SMUD is the 6th largest municipal utility in the U.S. and the 2nd largest municipal utility in California.
Charles A. White, P.E. – Mr. White is the Director of Regulatory Affairs/West for Waste Management.  Mr. White is a Registered Professional Civil Engineer and Geotechnical Engineer in California.  He has a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering and Master's degree in Civil Engineering, both from the University of Michigan.  Mr. White has over 37 years of professional experience in environmental engineering, waste management and pollution control in California.  Prior to joining Waste Management, Mr. White held a variety of responsible positions in California state government, including assignments with the State Water Resources Control Board, Regional Water Quality Control Boards, the Department of Health Services, and the Department of Toxic Substances Control.  Mr. White left government service in March 1990 to assume his current position as Director of Regulatory Affairs for Waste Management in the Western U.S.
Mr. White will discuss Waste Management programs for diverting wastes to make fuels and using landfill gas as a fuel.  Mr. White will cover regulatory drivers, carbon intensity of alternative fuels, the WM/Linde Altamont LFG to LNG, emerging technologies and more.

This event is organized by the Mother Lode Chapter of the Air and Waste Management Association.  This event may be attended by students and their professors, and interested members and their colleagues.  We welcome representatives of regulatory agencies, academia, industry, community and environmental groups, and the consulting community.
