Topic:  Smart Growth and Air Quality in the Sacramento Region

Guest Speaker:  Mike McKeever, Executive Director Sacramento Area Council of Governments

Intense growth, urban sprawl, and air quality concerns have lead innovative urban planning initiatives to be adopted in the Sacramento region. These "smart growth" initiatives have been pioneered, developed and implemented by the Sacramento Area Councils of Governments or SACOG, which is lead by their Executive Director Mike McKeever. Today SACOG is a national leader in sustainable, integrated regional planning, and is being watched nationally to see how successful these innovative strategies can be. Over the past two years the State of California adopted Senate Bill 375, which a comprehensive regional planning law that requires linking climate change, transportation, land-use, and housing. Mr. McKeever was a key contributor to that bill, and was appointed by the California Air Resources Board to chair the Regional Targets Advisory Committee, which is a 21 person statewide committee that is tasked to assist in the implementation of SB375. Mr. McKeever will be discussing current land-use planning in the Sacramento region to integrate SB375, and how air quality and climate change issues are impacting land-use planning in the Sacramento region. Please join us to learn more about how SACOG is planning for future development in the Sacramento region in light of climate change and air quality initiatives.
